This house has been designed by John Pawson as a place for calm and reflection. Located in mid Wales, near the town of Llanbister, it is a timeless example of architectural simplicity and beauty based on the concept of a retreat, where serenity, contemplation and restoration are foremost.
The house is a striking example of minimalist architecture. Designed with a monochrome palette, clean lines, and a refined materiality, it emphasizes light, space, and tranquility throughout. Interiors include a serene lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the surrounding landscape, a warm and minimal dining area accented with pale wood and soft lighting, and meditative corridors that stretch into quiet, light-filled passageways.
Thoughtfully designed elements throughout the house foster a deep sense of calm: a central lounge with a white-tiled fireplace set against pale grey brickwork; secluded, contemplative bathing spaces finished in dark, tactile stone; a minimalist kitchen with clean surfaces and panoramic windows; and bedrooms designed to immerse guests in the silence of the Welsh hills.
The setting enhances the experience—outside, the lush, rolling landscape invites peaceful walks and quiet observation, with tiered lawns and open paths echoing the house's meditative atmosphere. Each space within and around the home contributes to a complete architectural retreat, created to inspire inner stillness and deep restoration.
