This enchanting manor house built in the second half of the 17th century is considered one of the most emblematic architectural buildings of the South of Portugal and was classified as national monument in 2007. Now a beloved family project, this majestic house is integrated into the medieval wall that surrounds the historic center of the village of Serpa.
As a 17th century building, it represents an important example of "architectura chã" (in English, plain architecture); a Portuguese architectural style that comes from the Italian maneirismo. Architectura chã is characterized by austerity of form and the presence of vernacular traditions.
The garden consists of a woodland and an orchard surrounded by boxwood and scattered cypresses. The orchard is a beautiful orange grove. The water that irrigates this garden comes from a waterwheel on the wall of Serpa and enters the garden through an aqueduct constructed with the sole purpose of supplying the palace.
