Discovering timeless character in the ebb and flow

Discovering timeless character in the ebb and flow of architectural trends and their visual homogeneity is essentially why Team @plush.74 gets up in the morning.

This neighborhood, nicknamed "Seldwyla", just outside of Zurich, Switzerland, was built in the mid-1970's and looks as if it had barely aged in half a century.

The lead architect, Rolf Keller, joined by his contemporaries Rudolf Guyer, Fritz Schwarz, and Manuel Pauli, refused to follow the functionalist trends of Swiss suburbia construction of the time by proposing a rare fusion of highly individualistic, aesthetics-driven family housing and inclusive community spaces—including a "town square", a club room, a soccer field and a beautiful pool—in this 53-unit neighborhood.

With its graphic white shapes, terracotta tiles, raw wood accents and lush greenery, Seldwyla makes people feel like walking through a visually enticing, culturally surreal mediterranean village of sorts which was somewhat ironically (mis)placed into a very picturesque but also very Swiss landscape of soft hills and fresh meadows.

Taking inspiration from Rudolf Olgiati's universal modernism, Keller and team created a place that shows how architectural nonconformity, if done right, doesn't require grand operas, esteemed museums or corporate office towers, but instead can create a beautiful home for generations of humans over the decades.
